Great points! I actually reed just a couple of lines of email messages I
know I have no interest in based on subject descriptions alone. Doing this
keeps me informed, but more importantly, I can't tell you how much great
information and very useful apps I've been introduced to by simply reading a
couple of lines to determine subject matter. Remember, threads deviate on a
continuum from on-topic, to a little off topic, to completely off topic.
Some threads I know 100% I have 0 interest in such as those regarding
facebook, but I read them anyways because I may learn something new, or I
will discover a use for an app I had never considered.
My personal email reading practices prevents me from having to dig around
the archives as well as keeping me informed; this is especially useful to me
as I feel I'm still an IOS newbie. (Smile).

Subject: Re: What do they do???
Hello all. As has been pointed out by several there is really no right or
wrong answer on what to do about this situation. Usually what I try to do
when talking about an app that I like is giving a brief description of what
the app does. If I can I will also provide the iTunes link to that app. If
someone is reading my message from an iPhone, iPod, or iPad then double
tapping the iTunes link will take them to the app store which shows the app
description and the ability to purchase the app. If they are reading my
message from a computer then double tapping or rather clicking the iTunes
link will take them to either the webpage for the app or will open iTunes on
their machine. I do not always provide a link to the app, if I do not it is
because I do not have time or because I feel the app description I am giving
is sufficient enough for someone to find it themselves from the app store. I
do not mind questions asked on list regarding what an app does or where one
can find the app especially if the app has a common title. What I personally
take issue with is when an app has been discussed at length and then one day
later someone who has been on the list for the length of that discussion
writes a message to ask where you can find the app or what the app is about.
There are situations of coarse that maybe the person has been on list but is
receiving digest or no mail at all. And so then the person would not have
read those messages. However there are times when someone is just flat-out
lazy and the app at the time wasn't interesting and all of a sudden it is
yet they still ask what the app is about. It is hard to make assumptions and
to make a right decision on whether the reason someone asks what the app is
about is because of laziness, no confidence, or maybe they are just new to
the list. There are of course other reasons, for example maybe the person
doesn't know how to use Google or how to use the app store to find it for
themselves.
The bottom line and my suggestion to everyone is the following. If you see
messages on this list and they are on-topic, meaning they are questions
about an app or the usage of an app, and you want to reply, then do so. If
you feel the person should look for themselves regarding the description of
an app, you can either reply with the link to the app, or just ignore the
message and let someone else handle it. While this thread is very much
on-topic, and it definitely brings out different people's viewpoints, it is
still quite interesting to see how much time many of us have spent to give
our viewpoints regarding something that some of us could have just hit the
delete key on in the first place.
One last thing before I send this message. This list has archives. If
someone is wanting to know what an app does, searching the archives might
also give links to those threads which have discussed the app in the past. I
feel that the list archives are very much underutilized. However this also
goes full circle on wondering if the person asking the question either
doesn't know the list has archives, or doesn't feel comfortable in searching
list archives. Hence the reason for asking on this list. All I am trying to
say is that as long as the topic is with in the list rules, then the person
writing a message should feel okay in asking the list of question or
offering opinions about a given topic.
Thanks much.

ACtually, Dan, the information displayed when you choose an app does give

all a matter of interpretation, I just get tired of people asking what an

Hi Fred,
I hate to be the stick in the mud here but this only helps find aps. I
have used it a great deal and still do not know what most apps do.
I do this to search for apps and then have tried looking under the info
displayed when you double click on the app title and under reviews and
under related.
None of these tend to have anything that describes what the app
actually does.
If you have a way to find this description info I sure would like to hear
of it.
Thanks.

Subject: What do they do???
Inquiring minds want to know, what does it do? What does it do????
What does it do??? The answer is simple, in fact it is so simple it's a
wonder you didn't think of it yourself??? Unlike the I-devices, there is a
simple yet often-overlooked task which will easily bring you the
information you crave.
What is it you say, I can't wait, please, please, tell me.
Why it's as simple as typing the name of the app in to the space marked,
very clearly "SEARCH" I repeat "SEARCH", easily found Where??? Ah, yet
another question and yet one which answer is not the commonly used phrase,
"Over there", why it is, are you ready for this, are you sure you are
ready? It is after all your waiting to find an answer which has iluded
mankind for hmmm maybe 20 seconds or so, of course, in the app store. See
that wasn't so difficult, now, here are the directions. Merely double-tap
on the "app store" Icon on your i-Device, wait for it to open and then,
then, look down at the bottom of the page which you will come to. There
are five buttons labeled from left to right: "Featured", "top Charts"
"genius" "search" and last but not least "updates".
Now, all you have to do after tapping the "search" item, a new screen will
appear in which you will be presented with an on-screen keyboard, or, you
can use an external keyboard, either Braille or standard to gain the
information you so badly crave. Then all you need do is enter the
necessary information field using voice, keyboard bluetooth or keyboard on
the phone and tap "search" and voila, the information appears. This
feature can be used to find hidden apps like tap tap see, four square, or
perhapse you want to look up 4square. Words like radio or music can
present you with literally hundreds of functional applications. Perhapse
you long for apps which might be of use to you tomorrow, Saturday, or
maybe even next week.
Be sure to keep this document in case you forget what to do, lets again,
refresh,
1. Find app store on your i-device
2. Double tap to open this item.
3. find the WORD "SEARCH" near the bottom of the screen, double-tap on it
at which point you will be presented with an on-screen keyboard or you
can use an external one if you wish,
4. Type the name of what you are looking for or something like rpg's or
text adventures or cooking or games
5. Again, double-tap the "search" button by using a keyboard to input your
information your choice and off you go.
I hope this has been helpful, compared to making use of some of the apps
available for the iPhone this is truly a very easy task to accomplish.
If you still do not feel you understand this task, let me know and I
will indeed be glad to put together a podcast and if enough of you ask me
too, I'll see about putting it up on "applevis", what is that, you ask,
well, that's for another night. but that's another message.
Later folks.
Happy searching.
Fred Olver
Thanks to Ester and Jonathon for all of your previous posts teaching all
of us what we need to know, I only hope I have come close in presenting
the necessary information for those who are having difficulty
accomplishing this task.
