Hello Neal,

Sorry, but Jonathan is correct in regards to how Tap Tap See works.
It is true, the app first tries to get its answer from a database, but if no
answer is available, then it does refer it to a human, which then identifies it.
This does help make Tap Tap See so accurate with its results.
I myself learned about this from a podcast done by Accessible Devices, where
they interviewed the developer of the app.
It is show #35, and the link is:
http://accessible-devices.com/podcasts/?p=episode&name=2013-01-29_show35taptapsee.mp3

I hope this helps.

Hi Jonathan, I knew VizWiz did ask a human, but I didn’t know that tap tap see
did. According to RNIB, “It compares your photo with a large database online to
work out what it is.”

I can find nothing about this using a human. I know VizWiz does because you
actually send your request to a real person. Can you give me a source for how
Tap Tap See uses human intervention? I ask because I am doing a presentation on
iPhone apps in a few days and I don’t want to give them my incorrect
information if it needs to be corrected.

Thanks much.

Have a nice day down under.

Neal

Hi Neal, TapTapSee employs two techniques. It uses an object recognition
database first. If it can't get a result, then it will try crowd sourcing, that
is to say, asking a human.

Does anyone know how the Crowd sourcing works with Tap Tap See? Does taking too
many pictures overload the system? If the system doesn't recognize an object,
is it always routed to a person? If so, I will be much more judicious on the
number of objects I ask TTS to identify.

Patti, This app cycles through 5 pictures which it then deletes. This is why
you will hear it say something like picture 3 of 5. It gets to 5 and starts all
over again, so not to worry.

My guess is that there are two issues here. One, you may not have held the
camera in the right place or maybe too close or to far away. Second, it will
definitely depend on the light the camera sees. I can have it look at the same
object in different times of day and it will say slightly different things. It
does time out if it cannot see the picture or if it doesn’t know what it is. I
would suggest practicing with this in your home where you know various objects
are located and see if you can come up with some strategies of working with the
camera. This might help you when you are in other locations.

I hope this helps.

Hey yall. I went to the store today with a friend and while she was off
looking for something else, I got out my phone and opened up the Tap Tap See
app to see what happened with it.

I was in the pet aisle because I had just got a bag of cat litter.

so, I opened up the app and it said when I took the first picture, that it was
showing a bag of Meow Mix cat food.

"Cool" I thought, so I tried it again, and none of the other pictures I took
worked. Either they timed out or they were blurry.

Do I need to delete each picture I take before I take a new one, I just
couldn't figure out why I got those responses after that first picture.

I didn't think I was holding the phone any differently.

Just wondered, I could have a lot of fun with this app if I knew what I was
doing wrong.

Thanks,

Patti
