Hi Rick and others, There is no way to buy a Kindl book via the Kindl app just as there is no way to buy an Audible book via the Audible app. A couple of years ago Apple has changed their policy regarding in-app purchases, if Amazon sold Kindl or Audible books via the app, they would have to pay Apple 30% of the price and obviously they are not going to do that.
I think it's a bit greedy of Apple to demand this, it's not like they don't make enough money and also they do not prevent people from buying Kindl books or Audible books by forcing them to go through the website first.
