And, to chime in, BlindSquare will do all the things you asked about. It announces the nearest cross street, it's distance and relative position (12:00 for streets ahead of you, and 6:00 for those behind you, for instance.)
It will tell you the nearest address, along with locations of stores etc, as others have said. I do find that I can't rely on the distances it gives; sometimes they are very accurate, sometimes off by quite a margin, all of which has to do with the vagueries of GPS in general and cell service. Of all the GPS apps, it's the one I find most useful. It's proved to be a nice way of learning about places and street names while riding a bus route, for instance; and great for walking. It has it's own native voicing, which I was surprised to find at first, and, you can't use it to plot a route, for instance.
