But Raul, in your example, would it really be so much trouble for the respondent to write "Yes, IOS 7 is coming out today." Otherwise, one must read past all the headers to get to the question.

Bill, you do have a good point and I totally understand where you are coming from and for the record, it's not disrespectful to point out something like this. In an ideal world that would work perfectly, however in my experience most people don't read the new batch of messages they get first before replying. So what ends up happening is that let's say that you send off the thank you message, that would tell me, topic closed, you got the answer, all good. However if me, or someone else doesn't see that right away and as soon as they get to your initial message, before the thank you messages, they might reply, and then when they come to your message, they will see it wasn't necessary, or they might think, he's thanking me because I responded. I probably sound cynical, but after more than 15 years of maintaining mailing lists of various topics and different sizes, some from as little as 5 people and some even larger than 3000 people, you tend to look at things from a much wider point of view. If it was me, I would gamble that even if you send the thank you message to indicate stop, chances are, the thread will continue several messages more. One thing though, which I know happens, and there is no avoiding a one line answer, is when the answer to a question is simply yes or no, or something equally short. Things like that are acceptable. I don't expect someone to write an essay just to say yes and avoid a one liner message. Question: Is iOS 7 coming out today? Answer: Yes. One thing which I highly recommend is the following mailing list story. It's funny, but sadly, true. http://users.rider.edu/~suler/psycyber/listbulb.html I hope this helps you, and anyone else interested in this. -- Raul A.
