I assume you just specified in the Settings what the switch on the side of the iPad should do. On the iPad you can specify whether the switch should toggle Mute on or off or whether it should act as orientation lock. Just find the switch on the side, I don't have an iPad, but I think it's by the volume buttons just as it is on the iPhone, then make sure the iPad is in the orientation you want and flick the switch and that will lock it.
