Christopher, Ed I believe is asking about locking orientation on his iPad which is slightly different since you can set it so that the switch on the side which on the iPhone is Mute On/Off acts as the orientation lock.

Even if you have lock rotation set on, some apps will still switch to landscape mode, such as Solara and netflix, but you shouldn't switch to landscape mode just by rotating your iPhone.
