Yes, it is a serious question. Often, holding a jar, can, or other round and relatively small object about eight or 10 inches from the camera and slowly rotating it is enough to find the code. For boxes, the code generally seems to be near in edge or corner; I don't think I have ever seen one in the middle of a package. On pasta boxes, at least where I live, the code is on one of the thin edges. It all depends on the item and the packaging, but once you get used to wear a coat is on a particular item or type of item, things should get a bit easier. Also, the Digit Eyes website has some scanning tips for their own app, but those tips should be quite applicable to Red laser as well.
