Hello Melissa and all interested. Basically it's like this, you can set up a free Google Voice number at http://voice.google.com and forward it to your iPhone number, or any other number by choice. In my case, my real cell iPhone number is the primary number it forwards to. This means that when people call my GV number, it rings my cell phone. If I want to call that person back, or make outgoing calls which appear from my GV number rather than my real cell number, I have to either use a direct dial method or call back method via the Google Voice App or my favorite, GV Connect. Normally that is fine, and in most cases no problem. However if I am texting with someone, or if I see a number on a web page or if someone puts their number in an email, I can't just simply tap the number and call it and it come from my GV number. This is where jailbreaking and the Call on GV Pro and SMS on GV tweaks come into play. With Call on GV Pro, it fully integrates my GV number into the iPhone so that outgoing calls can be from my GV number. You choose the method of dialing out so you always use GV, or the tweak asks you if you want to choose carrier calls. It's completely flexible. Now for texting, when you have a GV number, it can be used to send texts back and forth with it. Normal SMS can be sent, but not MMS, which is used for pictures, videos, and audio. Again, if I want to text back and forth to and from my GV number and all outgoing texts need to show my GV number to hide my real cell number, I have to either use Google Voice app, or GV Connect. Another way is you can have Google forward all texts to your real cell and they are assigned a gateway number which is associated with that contact. This is very good the way it works, but let's say that someone with number 832-555-1234 writes me. I'll see an incoming text which shows 504-221-1922 and then the text shows 832-555-1234 followed by the text. As long as I respond to that 504 number, it will automatically forward to the real 832 number which wrote me. Again, not a big deal if I add that 504 into my contacts. I can even call it like normal, and the call will originate from my GV number. However again, if you want to initiate a text message, you have to use a Google Voice or GV Connect app. So, here comes jailbreaking and SMS on GV. It fully integrates the sms experience with my iPhone and so all I have to do is text someone like normal to their regular number and the incoming text they will see will be from my gv number. This also has the advantage that if another app sends out a text on your behalf, like sharing information, it will originate from your GV number.

I hope this helps, and if I can explains things further, please write me off list.

PS, a while back I wrote up a setup article on how to do all what I describe. The article is a bit outdated now since it was for iOS 5 I believe, but much of the same information applies. If I get requests off list, I can send that article to people. Again, off list for this.

Good afternoon Raul. I am wondering about the Google voice integration you

well.

Hi, can't speak for Ben, but below are some of the reasons why jailbreaking
isn't quite as sexy as it used to be for me. Other than the Google Voice
integration, which is still the primary reason for me to do it, the reasons
below no longer seem important.

iOS added the control center. Much of this functionality used to be done
with SBSettings, now the Control Center takes care of that.

iOS added the ability to block callers via messages, phone, or Facetime.
Previously you had to use a jailbreak tweak to get this functionality.

iOS added ability for more than 12 apps per folder. Again, jailbreak tweaks
were needed to get this.

Do you see the pattern? Apple might openly say that jailbreaking is akin to
going to hell, yet new features in iOS 7 give you functionality which
jailbreakers have enjoyed for years. So, Apple I think sees that some of the
things which iOS 7 now does might not be so bad and that jailbreakers have
the right idea.

Once Apple adds custom gestures to open apps or do neat things like toggle
wi-fi or whatever, then there will be no more need for Activator, another
wonderful jailbreak tweak.

I'm curious Ben, why do you and Raul think the reasons to jail break
are getting fewer and fewer? I can think of the Control Center and the
improvements in the App Switcher which provide some functionality you
could only get by jail breaking before, but it seems like there's
still a lot to be gained by jail breaking, such as changing some of
the defaults, like the keyboard, browser, TTS and so on, getting
access to the underlying file system and more. I'm not trying to argue
with you; I'm sincerely curious, and I'm guessing there's something I
haven't thought about.

I've jail broken my iPhone in the past, but one of my favorite apps
won't run on a jail broken phone, so I haven't jail broken in a while,
and I don't plan to, but I do kind of keep an eye on what's going on
in the jail broken space.

Hi,

I also feel that it is ready for general use, but as Raul said
previously, in all fairness to Apple, the reasons for jailbreaking,
especially for blind people are getting fewer and fewer.

Subject: iOS7 Jailbreak Released

Hi,

Just a quick message to let everyone know that as of around a day
ago
iOS7 is jailbreakable; it was released at very short notice and
with a healthy dose of drama as per usual.
I would suggest that people wait a few days before jailbreaking
their devices so we are able to gage the reliability of the
jailbreak; this has always been my recommendation for jailbreaks
but it is more important with this one than previous ones due to a
potentially incompatible version of Cydia. Having said this, I
intend to jailbreak an iPad running 7 later today and will report back
once done.

For those of you wanting to give it a go, visit http://evasi0n.com/
to get started.

Some frequently asked questions relating to jailbreaking and some
things to bare in mind:

1: Before applying the jailbreak make sure that you updated to iOS7
through iTunes as opposed to the over the air method.
2: Perform a backup via iTunes or iCloud just to be safe.
3: Voiceover is unaffected.
4: If something doesn't work out or if you don't like your phone
being jailbroken you can restore through iTunes to undoo it.
5: Jailbreaking does void your warranty. It is however worth baring
in mind that if your phone is still usable enough that iTunes sees
it, you can simply restore it to a non jailbroken iOS7 and Apple
will not know that you were previously jailbroken.
6: Jailbreaking brings lots of benefits; have a Google or read some
of the previous posts on this list or Applevis to get an idea of
the possibilities.

Cheers,
Ben.
