There are two ways in iOS7. First, the one you managed: touch just above the 
him button and leave your finger there until you hear two pop sounds, rising in 
pitch. Then, slide your finger straight up. Alternatively, touch the status bar 
and swipe three fingers up. Incidentally, the same holds true for the 
Notifications Center - touch the top of the screen, wait for the tones, and 
slide down, or touch the status bar and do a three-finger swipe down.
