Thank you both, but I do mean the "swipe" gesture not the flick. An example is in the camera app where you can choose the mode- photo or video.

Your finger should be moving before it contacts the screen, otherwise VO thinks you are touching. Think of it as a glancing blow, or that your finger is a golf club and you are trying to hit a golf ball sitting on the screen but only barely making contact with the screen-no divots please, grin. Also, keep the flick in as close to the same spot on the screen. Do not flick near the top and as you flick move your finger down the screen so that by the time you have done your fifth or sixth flick you are near the bottom. Try to stay in one area. The beauty of the flick or swipe gesture is that whatever you hear VoiceOver say after you have flicked, is where the VoiceOver cursor is and so a quick double-tap anywhere on the screen will activate that item.
