But if you do this, won't that render any app that needs location services, such as a GPS app useless?

The only way I am able to get location services to disappear from the status bar is to completely disable background app refresh. I attempted it again last night with the same result after a reboot and a warm reset.

Go to settings, general, background app refresh.

Again, this appears to only affect VO users, so expect it to take more time before the error is resolved. Apple only rushes fixes for critical situations that affect significant numbers of users, and VO users are less than 1% of the user base. Every email to
accessibil...@apple.com
helps because more emails about the same issue means they know more people have the problem, so they will increase the resources directed toward fixing the problem.

As for those who complain that Apple should fix it now, please remember back to the wonderful days of the extremely expensive specialised note-taker. It usually took the manufacturer between six months and a year between updates, and we always had to live with the problem until then, if the problem was even fixed. Oh, and let's not forget, some devices could not be upgraded without sending them back to the manufacturer. Finally, the annual upgrade fee was usually rather significant.

Hi David,

The battery draining problem is getting worse, so yesterday evening before going out I charged the phone as much as I could and timed the drainage. It dropped 35% in a 3 1/2 hour period of time. Hence, I will place my complaint to Apple accessibility. The phone was completely drained and dead as a doorknob when I just got up. Where can I find the background refresh to turn that off? I didn't totally turn off location services, but turned it off in apps that I didn't need to have it on. What else do I need to do to save on battery? Thanks.

Best,
Eileen

I turned off all background refresh. It looks like location services gets switched on. This causes 15-20% battery drain per hour, and the GPS antenna is the only thing that is this power demanding.

Also, it looks as though this is only happening to people running VO. None of my sighted friends are having the battery drain problem.

So, turn off background app refresh. Also, very regularly close apps from the app switcher. Finally, email accessibility so they will hopefully soon test this and find the problem.

One thing we do know, Apple does repair these sorts of problems when they figure out what is going on. Unfortunately, they usually don't role out an update when the problem is only with VO, so we will most likely be waiting a few months before the problem is resolved.

I am using an iPhone for S. I wrote previously while I'm Wi-Fi and streaming radio I am using 16% battery per hour. I called Apple tonight they have me doing iCloud restore. It made it worse I'm now using 20% per hour. I am curious what other folks are finding in a similar situation. Apple is suggesting a new restore from the computer. I do not want to do this. Suggestions are appreciated.
