My advice would be to practice at home with a printed page or possibly a book.
Lighting in restaurants tends to be low, so you might want to experiment in
different lighting conditions. So far, I've only used Textdetective once to
help me identify some new violin strings and it worked like a charm, far better
than Talking Goggles ever did.
