subscription through Itunes and couldn't register it on my apple tv since it
only allowed me to restore an annual subscription. The monthly subscription

You can also airplane games to your Apple TV from your other Apple
devices. There is your workaround. Although, you will be using two devices
to do this, so I see what you're trying to do. That is the best way I know
without spending $124 a year.
