I believe you received bad info. I say this, because I search for apps on my iPhone for my 3 children. I have my iPhone setup to share apps, music and books across devices. So all the apps on my children's iPads are iPhone apps. I have used their iPad to search the app store and didn't have any problem with the app store crashing. With that said, I haven't tried with the latest update.
