Did this command ever work for you? I'm running iOS 7 on an iPhone 4s and the dots 1 and 4 chords work perfectly. What I'm wondering is since you are running an older version of iOS, maybe this command is new in iOS 7.
But to answer your question, you will not lose data if you perform a reset. Have you tried turning the phone off and back on? Or re-establishing the pairing?
