The spell-check works perfectly on my iPod Touch 5th gen using the external Amazon Basics Bluetooth keyboard.
I just executed the equivalent of the instruction set I previously passed on for use with the onscreen keyboard. After typing in an incorrect word, press backspace key on the external keyboard and the "misspelled" prompt should sound. Now simply press the left arrow key to review your list of options to correct the misspelling. When you have selected an option, simply execute the up + down arrow command to enter the correction into the edit field. Press the spacebar to enter a space character then continue typing.
