did all that and it does not get to the phone. also the bloody thing won't let
me delete a few
things from the phone that I want to remove I guess to make that happen I have
to do a hard reset.

Subject: RE: music on the IPhone

Hi Ray,

First of all it is important that your music shows up in your iTunes music
library. I think the
easiest way to do this is that you put all your music together into one folder.
Of course you can
use subfolders for artist and album and, if you like, you can use Genre as
well. For example, I
prefer to have my music in the music folder which is a subfolder of the iTunes
Media folder which in
turn is a subfolder of the iTunes folder. If you are familiar with how folder
paths work, in Windows
7 the default location is as follows (I am assuming your Windows user name is
"Ray":

C:\users\ray\music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music

I don't use Genre folders here since all the music in this folder is managed by
iTunes and iTunes
uses the associated ID3 tags to know which artist belongs to which genre, which
song belongs to
which artist and album etc.
You can, however, make folders for "Alternative", "Classical", "Country",
"Pop", "Rock" etc. if you
wish.

OK, so now in this folder I have folders for all the artists I have music from.
If I have more than
one CD by a particular artist I then have subfolders for each album and the
songs are in these
folders. For example, I have a subfolder in the above Music folder for artists
such as Dire Straits,
Eagles, Queen, Supertramp etc. In my Dire Straits folder I have further
subfolder for the albums I
have like "Brothers in Arms", Love Over Gold"
etc. In my Eagles subfolder I have subfolders for "Greatest Hits", "When Hell
Freezes Over" etc. I
think you get the idea.

OK, now to iTunes:

Open iTunes and select "Add Folder to Library" from the File menu. A standard
Open In Windows
dialogue appears, browse to the Music folder by going to "My Music, then
iTunes, then iTunes Media
and then find Music.
Tab to "Select" and activate it, this will add all the music you have in the
Music folder including
that in all subfolders to your iTunes music library.
If you add more albums or songs you have to repeat this step.

You can now check that you are in Music (if you use Windows Control+1 will do
the trick" and I would
highly recommend that you make sure the "Songs"
radio button is checked and not "artists" or "Albums" or one of the other ones.
This will allow you
to enable the column browser. You can do this from the View menu or you can use
Control+Shift+B for
"Browser" to do so.
If the column browser is active it allows you to nicely browse your music in
iTunes by genre, artist
and album. For example, if you select "Rock" from the drop-down list of genres
and then tab a few
times until you are in the songs list view, you see only the songs which belong
to the genre Rock.
If you select "Dire Straits" from the artist drop-down list you would only see
all the songs by Dire
Straits and if you select "Brothers in Arms" from the album drop-down iew only
the 10 songs from
that album would show. It works great, is super accessible with Jaws and a very
nice way if you want
to play music from iTunes.

OK, now to the part of getting the music to your iPhone:

Make sure your phone is connected to your computer with the USB cable.
Find your phone in Devices and tab until you get to all the radio buttons like
"Summary", "Info",
"Apps", "Tones", "Music" etc.
When you find the music radio button press the spacebar to check it.
Now tab some more until you come to a checkbox which says "Sync Music" and make
sure it is checked.
Now tab 3 or 4 more times, 3 times will put you on a radio button which is read
as "Sync entire
music library" and if you want to sync everything you have in your music
library then simply check
it, tab a bunch of times until you get to "Apply" or "Sync" and press enter or
the space bar. The
sync will start and depending on how much music you have it could take a while.
You can press F6 and
it should take you to where you can check the progress of your sync, you may
have to tab once after
pressing F6. I have about 3,000 songs on my iPhone (about 20 Gb) and that takes
I believe 20 or 25
minutes to sync over.
If you have too much music and you only want a selection on your iPhone, then
check the next radio
button which is called "Sync selected playlists, artists and genres".
After you check it you have drop-down list views for Playlists (if you have
any), for "Genre",
"Artist" and "Album. This allows you to, for example, sync all music from the
genre "Rock", but I
usually prefer to sync by artist. I tab until I get to where Jaws says "Artists
Treeview" and here I
can now use the down arrow to go through the listing of all artists and simply
use the spacebar to
check the ones I want. When I am done I tab to "Apply" or "Sync" and press
enter and the sync
starts.
Note that sometimes it says "Apply" and sometimes "Sync", it doesn't matter
what it says as long as
you activate it.

That's about it, it's a pretty simply and very accessible process, let me know
if this works for
you.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: music on the IPhone

Some months ago I indicated that I could not get music to the phone. I could
get it to the media
folder but it did not transfer to the phone. What might I have been doing
wrong? Also is it
necessary to convert the MP3 files to M4A if so how does one make that happen?
Or, am I just out in
left field here?
