It's definitely possible to do this, developers on Android do it all
the time, it's just a matter of whether Apple is willing to do it. For
that price, I would also want a demo first.
Original message:
I do somewhat agree with you, Alex, if an app is that expensive some
sort of trial is definitely a good idea. I do, however, also think
Apple should change their policy and figure out a way for people to
Test Drive an app so to speak. They announced this ne wthing where
developers can create a video or something like that to show what their
app can do, but that of course if probably of little value in most
situations for a blind person. I like very little about Android when it
comes to security, the fragmentation of the OS and the many devices,
but the ability to buy an app and return it within a short time frame
is very nice and I wish Apple could do something like that.Say you buy
an app and your credit card or account credit is charged 30 minutes
after downloading the app. If you downloaded it and found that it
didn’t work you could do something simple which would void out the
transaction. In any case something which is in line with Steve Jobb’s
old “It just works” motto and of course you can do this only once for
any particular app..

Sieghard

Subject: Re: KNFB Reader App
I know where you are coming from, and certainly there are ways of (sort
of) testing the app before making the purchase. What gets me is the
attitude; they are asking for $100 up front, with little chance of a
refund, yet plenty of models exist that would let users try before
buying. Instead of adopting such a model, though, they first blame
Apple for not offering an official app trial mechanism (see yesterday's
tweet), then they say that adopting a freemium model of some kind would
be confusing. This, despite the fact that plenty of apps,
blind-specific or not, use freemium pricing to great success. Bottom
line: they want a whole lot of money, but won't allow a trial even
though doing so would be easy. They'd rather blame Apple for nothing at
all, or claim it would be a lower-quality experience somehow.

Alex, there is no doubt that having a demo for individuals to test
would be ideal. And if enough people push forward and put enough
pressure on an FB, perhaps it will happen. I also believe that wow a
lot of us will not buy this app the first comes out. A lot of people on
this list will. We can ask them to scan for certain things that we like
to check out. Yes, it's not the same as us doing it, but there are
other ways to manage this. I just don't think it's with getting that
worked up over. After all, one of the main reasons at this list is so
beneficial is the fact that there are lots of guinea pigs out there.
There are a lot of people who will buy apps and test them. We can learn
from them. That's one of the main reasons I stay on this list along
with being able to hopefully assist others on occasion. It wasn't for
these facts. With all the extraneous messages that are passed
back-and-forth, I would've unsubscribed along time ago.

I know there will be demos of it, but that isn't the same as making
sure it works for each person. I mean, say it does great scanning
pages, but chokes on envelopes? Most of my scanning is envelopes, but
unless I can test that out ahead of time, I won't know that the app
will not work for me as well as it did for the guy in the podcast.
That's just an example; everyone has different use cases, requirements,
and expectations, and I simply can't understand why the developers of
this app refuse to adopt a simple model that would let each potential
customer make sure the app is what they want and need before spending
all that money.

Alex, it's not as bleak as you portray. Someone on more than one
individual do a podcast and will get a good idea of how the app really
works. After all, nobody has to buy it the first day it comes out.
Using some patients and caution will yield good results in the end.

Regarding an app trial, I think this is pretty clear. @KNFBReader sent
the following tweet earlier today:
@davetaylor2112 Thanks for the suggestion. We will not be creating a
"freemium" app. This only causes confusion and lowers expectations.
So there you have it. Cough up your hundred dollars based on others'
experiences, or don't get the app; no trials for anyone. I personally
find this to be ridiculous and a bad decision, but what do I know?

About five years ago, one of my patients had purchased the KNFB Reader
with the Nokia phone for about $1250. He was really thrilled with his
purchase and thought it was great value. He has been using it for the
past five years and it's been working flawlessly! The results of the
OCR have to be seen to be believed! I was shocked to hear that this app
now sells for $99!! It's a steal! It's an outstanding application!
Comparing it with other available OCR apps is like comparing chalk with cheese.
