The messages app can be used with anyone who has iOS 5 or later. It can be set 
up with either any address you use with Apple ID or with a phone number. When 
you add a contact, you can indicate whether the mobile phone is an iPhone. 
Messages won't work with other smart phones. The interface is pretty 
straightforward.
