I think Apple keeps a list of iPhone numbers, and when it detects that a number is an iPhone number, it attempts to use iMessage. Both phones must have iMessage turned on. The advantage to iMessage is that not only is it free, it can be however long, not limited to text message length. But if you turn on iMessage, be sure also to turn on send as sms. I have heard of instances where a non iPhone user never got the message, once it was determined that there phone was not an iPhone and iMessage could not be used. It will send it as an iMessage whenever possible, an sms when iMessage can't be used.

Sometimes I wonder if an iphone can tell whether or not another iphone sent the message. I have not designated any of my contacts numbers as iphone numbers, just as mobile. But then when I go to send them a message, the edit box tells me it is an iMessage. So it just makes me wonder if something is going on behind the scenes that we do not know about. Dear Listers, I am a late comer to iMessaging. I've been reading about this service on the web but I'm still unclear how to make the best use of it with Voiceover. Does anyone know of a podcast that would explain this function? For instance, does the messages.app on the mac detect automatically who in your contacts has an iphone, or does it have to be chosen manually? Can one send messages to an ordinary smart phone like Nokia using messages.app? Many thanks Andrew -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list.
