Hi, On my iPad III, the mail app does always open in the last message that was previously opened, even if you had closed the message, and this happens even in portrait. I have always thought this a bit odd but the back button is right where you would expect it, at the top left, and so this is only a minor annoyance. Thanks, Scott Duck
