You certainly can do it with a split tap. What is described in "iOS8 without
the eye" and is maybe more difficult but works, is to tap the letter and then
release quickly. I think this would require a good finger memory of where the
different letters are or a screen protector with dots because if I understand
correctly you are just tapping down and then releasing quickly. It's different
from touch typing because with touch typing you can just slide your finger
around and lift up. The direct touch typing needs a definite tap and then a
quick release. I'm probably not describing this very well and I'm not very good
at it yet but I've done it enough to know sort of how it feels. But a split tap
also would accomplish this I think.

I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper
thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
And now, every day:
"This I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord
never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness."
