I think there is a fine line between not being careful and someone just want that extra protection. People that uses cover for their phone do not mean by anyway of imagination are less careful than those that do not have phone covers.
I choose to use cover and screen protector on my phone because i want that extra protection from dust and finger prints and anything else. $1000+ is a big number for me to even have a tiny scratch on the phone. At the end of the day, it comes to personal choice. Just like some are still comfortable enough to use ios5, some barely give ios8 a go and decided to downgrade it back to ios7. In Australia, it is a legal requirement to rolerscade and riding the bike with helmet. You can choose not to use any personal protection equipment, but if you have an injury that is not reversable, more than just a few cuts or scars, there is no time for you to ponder on "what if".
