I'm one of those who prefers the feel of the iPhone itself and not the
feel of some case. I spent a lot of money on the iPhone, and I want to
enjoy it myself. I don't just want to keep it nice for it's next owner.
The iPhone is plenty tough in and of itself.
I think this is a personal decision though. People have told me I'm
stupid or idiotic for not using a case, but it's my money and my iPhone
and what I do with it is frankly no one's business. I'm also not all
that interested in whether other people use a case on their phone or
not. My wife uses a case on her phone, and I don't think any less of her
for it. I don't think she thinks I'm stupid or idiotic for not using a
case, but I'm sure that'll change if I ever drop or damage my phone.
Knock on wood, it hasn't happened in the dozen years I've had a cell phone.

At the end of the day, it comes to personal choice. Just like some
are still comfortable enough to use ios5, some barely give ios8 a go
and decided to downgrade it back to ios7.
In Australia, it is a legal requirement to rolerscade and riding the
bike with helmet. You can choose not to use any personal protection
equipment, but if you have an injury that is not reversable, more than
just a few cuts or scars, there is no time for you to ponder on "what
if".
And, sometime is not about you, is about the safety of others too.
