An easier work-around is: touch the delete button. Take your finger away. Touch the delete button again. Now, focus is properly on delete. Double-tap or split-tap to activate the button. This bug was in iOS 5 as well and was fixed then. Hopefully, Apple will find the cause soon and correct it.
