Ok, this is precisely it. A safeguard in case you really need to write that person and got half a message you don't want to lose.
So, I did as said before - Get VO on to the text field, crank rotor round to Edit, flick up/down to select all and double tap, flick up/down some more to cut and double tap; then back out of that sender's thread and the text field will close and stay closed until you double tap it to edit in it again.
