In the latest Today In IOS podcast, this voice over lte was discussed. Theone they discussed is only available through Verizon. Although I am aVerizon customer, I didn't pay a lot of attention because, apparently, it isonly for the iPhone 6 and 6 plus, I am keeping my iPhone 5 for a while. Onehas to go into their Verizon account, on the Verizon site, and turn it on,then into their cellular settings on their phone and turn on something else.When it is set up, not only does it give much better call quality than overthe normal cellular network, one can be on the internet at the same timethey are on a call, as can the gsm phones. It's called voice over LTE, and as far as I understand, they use the LTE
data network to send your call, similar to voip as opposed to the old way.
They can probably use a better sounding codec doing this because they don't
have to be stuck with what it was back in the early 2000's when cell phones
first had digital.

Kelly, I think you answered my questions. I want to be able to make WI-FI
calls on my iPhone rather than using 3G or 4G. I didn't know that MagicJack
allowed one to use the iPhone contacts. This may be an answer.

Thanks for the wealth of information. Now, another question if you don't
mind.

Some carriers are supposedly using some other technology to improve call
quality. I don't think it uses WI-FI. I'll do some research to try and
remember what this is, but if anyone knows what I am talking about, I would
appreciate being educated.

Are you speaking about the technology called a generic access network?
this allows cellular voice packets to be transmitted to a WiFI transmitter.
This is commonly known as WIFI calling.  Currently, T-Mobile is the only
carrier in the United States that supports this functionality.  It uses the
voice minutes on your phone plan.  Another technology enables peple to use
their data connection to make telephone calls.  the data connection could
use the cellular network or a WIFI connection.  MagicJack and the vonage app
enable this kind of calling free.  both of these apps allow people to place
telephone calls using their iPhone's contact list.  It is presented in
nearly the same way as it is with the contacts app.  rather than getting
focused on marketing buzz words, it would be better if you described what
you want to accomplish with your phone.

Am I under the wrong impression?, or are you using WiFi if it is found
by your iPhone and you are connected?  If this is the case, no app
would be necessary.

How about Magic jack?  It allows you to make free calls in the US and
Canada using wifi.

something similar.  don't know of any such thing for us carriers but
suspect some of them do have such an app.  I can make calls without
using my minutes and it will use wifi to call any phone number in
Canada  good for when the cell signal sucks but there is good wifi.
