Sure, It’s easier for me to manage my playlist, than it is to look through every song.
As I go through my songs, I press the application key, and arrow to add to playlist and choose my playlist. Then, if I want to take a song away from my playlist, I just go to the playlist, arrow to the song, and hit delete. When it’s time to sync, I choose what playlist I want. Here is another scenario. I have a Christmas playlist. When it’s Christmas time, I just choose to sync it. When Christmas time is over, I just uncheck that playlist, so next time it syncs, it will come off of my phone. On my device, I have a playlist for me and one for my wife. When we are together, we play hers, since she does not like my taste in music. Even though we can play one playlist or another on the phone, the songs tab will have all of the songs listed, from all playlists. Personally I've never really got into playlists and would much prefer to do it without, but would welcome your comments on why you use the playlist method. Also, I would need a few instructions before putting music on without a playlist, especially with regard to how to select individual items. Tab until it asks to sync entire library and make sure it is not checked. Make sure sync selected playlist artists, and genres is checked.
