Another option for menus if you know ahead of time where you are going is
checking to see if the menu is online before you go to the restaurant.
You can spend some unpressured time reading through it and at least narrow down
your choices before you get there.

Obviously, not all online menus are accessible or even there, but that is
becoming more and more common.
Some of my favorite restaurants even post their specials for dinner by about
2PM, so I can even check to see what those are and don't have to ask when I get
there.

Subject: Re: reading menus with the KNFB reader - Re: how are people liking
KNFB reader?

I think we're falling into that area where people are assuming what
works for them works for everyone else or that all situations are the
same. I'll probably fall into the same trap myself, but if I'm at a
restaurant with my family, and my wife is there, then I'll go through
the menu with her. If it's just my boys then I'd scan the menu myself.
My boys are good boys, and they wouldn't mind reading the menu to their
old man, but I can tell when they do they'd rather be talking about
sports or video games while I'm looking over the menu myself. I also go
to plenty of restaurants with friends, who although their spoken English
is good, they have trouble reading the menu in say an Italian
restaurant. Sure there are times when I'd have someone read or discuss
the menu with me but there are other times when I could use the KNFB
Reader to be more independent, and I wouldn't be doing it just to show off.

Similarly for an elevator. If someone asks what floor do you want to go
to, I'll just tell them. I won't use the braille buttons just because
they're there. If no one speaks up though, or I'm on the elevator
myself, then I'm sure glad they're there.
