Perhaps we should apply the regexec.c bits from:

but not the regcomp.c bits. I'm afraid it may be a day or two before
I can get to trying a build with that.
I put in a hack to initialize the variable to zero, and also a cast in
op.c and am running the test suite for a non-threaded build now. It
should complete in a few hours.
