Stephen,

In general, I only run the server on Windows and I only run the viewer on
Linux. Of course, if you want to be able to view two machines, say one Linux
and one Windows, from a third machine, then the two machines both need the
server. In other words, the server only needs to run on a machine that is to
be connected to by a viewer, so if you are using the Linux machine only to
run the viewer, then the server doesn't need to be running on the Linux
machine.

As for building KDE, it is because I want to use a new version of the viewer,
called krdc, which is not available in the KDE distributed with RH7.3 because
it is a new program. You can download from the KDE web site the latest
version of KDE which is always somewhat newer than the Red Hat distribution.
Generally I don't do this because the I would rather wait until the newer
code is more stable and Red Hat has built it for me, but in this case I
believe the only way to get krdc is to download a newer version of KDE.

However, you don't need krdc to use VNC; it has a feature that I like
(scaling) that the TightVNC viewer doesn't have but the TightVNC viewer works
fine with Linux.
