Couple of preliminary things / gotchas:

1. Port forwarding is on in your router, right?
1a. what port? 5900? Is your winvnc listening for display 0 or oops do
you need to change that? (If winvnc is listening on display 5, for example,
then you need to change that to 0 or forward port 5905 instead and when you
try to connect, use the :5 at the end of the address.)

1b. What IP are you forwarding to? Let's say 192.168.1.50. Does the
laptop have that same IP? (perhaps you have the laptop set on dhcp and it
is obtaining an ip that is different from what you have in the port forward
table?)

1c. What firmware version of the router are you using? I have version
1.44 Nov 21 2002, mine works fine.

1d. Are you using the "Forwarding" page or the "UPnP Forwarding" page? I
don't know if it makes a difference, since I have entries on both pages (and
all work), but I have vnc set up on the "Forwarding" page, not the UPnP
page.

Subject: Linksys BEFSR41 Router Problems

I have been unsuccessful using VNC remotely from my laptop computer to
access my home machine which is behind a Linksys BEFSR41 Etherfast/Cable
DSL Router.

I have followed all of the instructions on the realvnc website for doing
so and have worked directly with Linksys technical support without any
success.

When the laptop is attached to the home network, I have no problem
accessing the home machine using one of the locally assigned IP
addresses. However, once I try to use the external IP address assigned
by my cable Internet access provider, the connection to the server
fails.

If anyone has any information which will help me solve this issue, I
would be greatly appreciative.

Make it a great day!
