I agree with some of the previous posts,
the first step is to get the VPN up and running correctly.
You are thinking of doing this?

vncviewer --> VPN Client ----->(Internet)------>VPN Server------>-vnc server
So the first step is to get the VPN running correctly, with the
firewall running and everything.
Step 2: while connected on the vpn you should be able to ping the
LAN IP address of the work computer from the laptop. If not you need
to repeat step one.
Step 3: when step 2 works all you need to do is this.
a. Have vncserver running on the machine at work
b. Have the vpn server up and running
c. On the Home Laptop: Connect to the VPN and Login
d. On the Home Laptop: run vncviewer
IMPORTANT - to connect type the LAN IP of the work computer. i.e. the
private IP assigned to the work computer on the LAN (192.x.x.x or
10.x.x.x or etc)
