Thanks Mike! I think "F8+f" is exactly what I need, though "F8+F8" is better
to me :-P

I did a search on this topic before, though not able to get a solution:

1 Remap ThinkPad specific "forward/back" keys to switch workspace (as your
first suggestion). It doesn't work in Full Screen mode.

2 People who use VirtualBox on Linux also have similar requirements. But
they can type a "right control" (known as host key) to give up key focus.

3 Use xtightvncviewer instead, which has a defect that fully occupies the
screen even not in FullScreen mode. Then I can switch workspace mean while
view all the contents. Unfortunately its "copy/paste" functionality is too
difficult to use, thus I give up it.
