Hi,

Yes, you can do the sort of things that you mentioned using PalmVNC! If you
have a 56k connection, PalmVNC should be very useable - it can even be used
over a 9600 baud GSM mobile, but it is a little too slow to do any real work
(you wouldn't want to write a Word document, for example).

For information on setting up Win98 for dial-in access, see the "Installing
the Dial-Up Server" section of
http://www.microsoft.com/MOBILE/pocketpc/stepbystep/modemsync.asp - ignore
all the stuff about ActiveSync, that's for PocketPCs only.

Once you've got the connection up and running, and WinVNC running on the PC,
you can use the Palm to control almost any application on the PC -
basically, Graffiti works like the keyboard and the stylus like a mouse.

Could you please tell me where you saw the reviews? I like to keep track of
these things...

By the way, a new version 1.40 of PalmVNC is due for release over the next
few days. The new version will include a complete VNC server optimised for
use with the Palm, including a proper installation package, better
documentation, etc. The PalmVNC software has undergone a number of
improvements for 1.40 to boost performance and useability (including
multiple server profiles, intelligent progress monitoring, better mouse
functionality, and more!) Keep an eye on the PalmVNC homepage
(www.harakan.btinternet.co.uk/PalmVNC) for updates.

Hope this helps,

Chris Smith (Harakan Software).

Subject: VNC, Win98, Palm IIIc - Can it do this?

I've just recently entered the world of Palm computing and have run
across rave reviews of Palm VNC. So I followed the links, got the
Palm side software and the Win-Server side software but now I'm
wondering if it can even do what I've gotten the impression that VNC
can do.

First, can I set it up so that I can remotely dial into my Win98
machine (like Laplink), and then the host would recognize the call as
a data call and answer. Or, does it have to be connected to the
internet already in order to use VNC?

Second, will I be able to control software on the host machine such
as my accounting software (peachtree), and if so, to what extent?

Am I just dreaming that I might be able to get this type of remote
control working on a Palm? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!
