First of all, you shouldn't be using root for everyday operations. It is
dangerous. Do all of your normal work as a normal user and only use root
for system adminitration purposes.
If you really need to telnet in as root, just telnet as a normal user and
execute the "su" (superuser) command. This will prompt you for root's
password.
