The connection with the Java applet in MSIE is just as (in)secure as a
connection with a native viewer. VPN'ed connections should be secure
with both the applet and a native viewer. Normal connections over the
internet are not very secure.

While you can have routing problems with a VPN, it's odd that you can
connect with the applet, but not otherwise. What about pinging,
traceroute, using other services on the LAN, or telnetting to hostname
590x? (you did try 5900, and not 5800, right?).
