Well yes. You need a password to access your desktop. VNC needs to be
told what password to expect. It can't retrieve the user's UNIX password
because /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow are one-way crypted. Therefore, the
first time you start VNC as a new user, it asks you for the password to
use. You have to run it manually in order to get that prompt.
And yes, this is already documented, if you look hard enough.
