I have a linux box (RH7.2) and am running multiple VNC server instances. I
have several user accounts, and each user account has VNCSERVER running on a
particular display. So user JSMITH runs VNCSERVER :4, and when he wants to
connect to the box he connects to 192.168.1.10:2 and uses his own password.
This way, each user has their own individual shell.

I put the gnome-session command into each user's ~/.vnc/xstartup file, and
there were no issues. If a user is actually logged into the box and is
running GNOME then I get errors like "a window manager is already running" but
GNOME starts up anyway and there are no functionality losses that I can
detect.

I have since removed the command, since most of the users didn't like the
interface...mostly because invoking the gnome-session command also opens
Nautilus. It is now an option in their TWMRC file that they can select and
run from the menu if they want it. Now if I could open GNOME without Nautilus
maybe people would use it more.

The same goes for KDE, I have startkde as an option. When I run it I get all
kinds of error messages, such as "extension 'RENDER' missing on display
':4.0'" and "Session management error: Could not open network socket" but the
GUI opens and there are no functionality losses that I can see.
