Bet a nickel it was version 8.

To be fair, over low bandwidth links it was much faster than VNC in those days -
would also lock up like crazy in sessions sometimes, though.

Here's a whole set of techniques I used for "pcAnywhere helpers" before
discovering VNC - some are ridiculous:

(1) Multiserver domains - we had one where there were 3 servers with pcAnywhere.
I showed our database people who had to work with that site the easy trick: you
log on to another server via pcAnywhere, connect to the service manager for the
server that is hung, and stop/restart the PCA service.

(2) We were running Post.Office on a couple of systems, which allowed you to
send email to the system and have it take some action. I don't remember the
implementation details, but we could do that, then wait 10-15 minutes for the
Post Office account to stop and restart the service.

(3) A batch file with a shortcut on the server's desktop for All Users to:
net stop "pcAnywhere Host Service" & net start "pcAnywhere Host Service"
so we could call and have someone with a server password locally to go over and
restart it.

(4) Microsoft's WebAdmin for NT4 was a (free!) tiny, solid, lightweight product
which I *still* recommend to people (that version even works fine on Win2K). On
2 occasions I installed IIS 4 and WebAdmin just so I had a means of remotely
connecting to stop and restart the service.
