IMHO
The research is established, BUT it seems you missed a few major 
points that sets it apart from a lot of what's 
currently developing:
1)  commercially available (not a research project anymore)
2)  FDA-compliant
3)  and most of all... it's acomplished with VRML
I choose VRML over other 3D rendering possibilities because I
believe that the VRML community is filled with the creative minds,
open development efforts, and appropriate forward-thinking 
mentalities that are needed to keep this kind of technology on the 
"right" path as opposed to inadverantly becoming a Sci-Fi reality
turned bad.
Perhaps I'm banging a bit hard on the podium, but I believe that
VRML has the potential to be a key element in a transformative
process that spans the gaumet from the individual to the societal.
