Wow Jon,
This sounds fantastic! Danny and I were talking about something similar not
too long ago -- in fact we had a meeting of the Virtual Reality Association
on this subject some months back. Wow! If we had known we would have got
you to be our special guest... hmmm... could we do that some time in the
future? Danny would be rapt!
And your art gallery world sounds fantastic! Yes, yes, yes. Do make it a
part of the Worldcon-VR event! Keep in contact. I will talk with you more
on both these subjects soon.
Best wishes,
- Miriam

I have a have a VRML world that I have been building for our VNet site and
was wondering if it might be of use. It is composed 3 art galleries on a
gigantic mandelbrot landscape. The galleries (in this world) are strictly
for fractal art. There's a huge 5 story gallery that can hold hundreds of
pictures, a featured artist gallery, and a mandelbrot gallery. The
pictures are designed with LODs and inlines so that they don't hog
bandwidth or CPU juice.
The interesting thing about how we are designing the site is that each
contributing artist gets access to their own protected area for picture
uploads. This allows them to swap out pictures in their display space
whenever they want. We will be working in voting capabilities so that the
people who visit the world can decide what they like the most. The
"favorite artist" then get's to display their work in the "Featured Artist
building". E-commerce is being built in as well so that people can order
hi-res 20x30 photographic prints by clicking on the images and placing an
order.
We plan on putting in a lot of polyhedra sculpures (very cool) too, but I
need to get final approval from the content developer first. He already
said that he liked the idea but we just need to formalize it. We might
even have fractally created music streamed in as well.
Also: We also have gotten some very important contracts taken care of so
that I can finally run my big mouth about why I've been taking so long to
get actively involved in VNet development ;-) The VNet calling has been
grinding away on me for nearly 9 months now and it's driving me nuts being
repeatedly "pulled" from it.
VRML IS NOW BEING COMMERCIALLY USED IN APPLICATIONS THAT ARE CONTROLLED BY
YOUR BRAINWAVES. We've actually created FDA-compliant commercial VRML
products that you control with your brainwaves to "re-wire"/operantly
condition you're central nervous system (must be under the supervision of a
licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, or neurologist). This is to
permanently help people with brain injuries, with psychological and
learning disorders, with physiological imbalances, desiring peak mental
performance training, and engrain meditation techniques. These apps are
going to be available on the major clinical biofeedback systems and go to
market in a week.
Is this something that might fit as well? Sounds Sci-Fi but has a very
positive use.
