Open Source was Platinum's gig. CAI has made no direct statements about
this, after their purchase of Platinum.
What's up at Computer Associates? Well, I'm deeply confused...
CAI's history is one of a company that does't develop software, rather they
buy it, milk it, and dump it.
But they apparently do have an honest interest in Web3D.
They have a relationship with Metacreations and Metastreaming technology.
Metacreations has made major shifts internally indicating a commitment to
being the next Web3D standard. But is very unclear what this means,
Metacreations also has relationships with Intel and Microsoft but it
appears those are on paper only. So Metacreations is in my opinion
probably sucking up to CAI as if their future depends on it. ( Which it
probably does )
CAI recently purchased an older high-end 3D software company called
Multi-Gen ( I think that's the name ). The CosmoPlayer website is being
worked on. And Viewpoint, CAI's primary 3D division is hiring Web 3D
people. ( Course they have too - Platinum let everybody go )
My resume is in ;^) if CAI is serious about Web3D they'll hire me. Not
scientific, not conclusive, but I think it's true. ( oh and Jeff, I've
also put my name in at RIT, uh-oh )
Steve
I follow Cosmo as closely as I can, being a Mac User and well, it's my only
real choice. Unofficially Cortona for the Mac will be out by SIGGRAPH,
but that's again not official.
