I've been reluctant to use an RBL because of issues like this. I think I've
saved a message that'll help you though. let me look . . . yes the
information follows. Am I being silly not to do this registry hack and
start adding in some rbl's? What's the best one to start with - something
with open relays or foreign lists or what?

I believe there's a registry entry you can fix that will let you reduce the
default time to a reasonable level if the query takes too long when
consulting the blocklist.

Using regedt32 ...

\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPRS\Parameters

Click Edit/Add Value with the Value Name of: AsyncDnsTimeout1

Set the type to REG_DWORD

Change to Decimal value and put in 20 (for 20 seconds) or whatever timeout
value you feel comfortable with.

Thank you!!! It was nice to see a fresh list of blacklists. I was only
using osirusoft and ordb. We'll see how these new ones work out.

I got an Email from one of my customers who was having problems with an
SMTP
Server being slow to respond (when you telnetted to port 25, the mail
server
would take upwards of 2 minutes to show the SMTP banner).

This is the reason why:

----------------
Santa Ana winds in California took out connectivity for osirusoft's rbl
servers, and they're still unreachable today. Remove them, or everything
will either "time out" and be very slow or it will reject all mail
temporarily until the rbl works again.

I ended up disconnecting from osirusoft's rbl service that blocks spams,
and mapped to different ones which work, and the speed is now back
o normal.

I currently use (orisusoft currently disabled):

sbl.spamhaus.org Spammers and spam support
relays.ordb.org open relays
proxies.monkeys.com open proxies
formmail.monkeys.com formmail.pl blacklist
proxy.relays.osirusoft.com open proxies (down)
dynablock.wirehub.net dynamic addresses (dialup, etc)
opm.blitzed.org open proxies
dialups.visi.com dialup addresses
relays.visi.com open relays
-----------------

Sounds like Osirusoft's DNSBL may be having problems with connectivity
so if
you are using it (or SPEWS), you might want to be carefull with that.
