The mouse is stimulated by heat therefore the cat is also stimulated by heat. He just uses the mouse as a sort of pre-amplifier so that he doesn't have to use as much externally supplied heat as he would if had to drive the cat directly.
Also, when in switched mode (or whatever he calls it), the thermal mass of the mouse (and the heat it still generates when turned off) may help to smooth the drive pulses (like a thermal capacitor). The mouse may also function as a controllable fuel supply. By turning the heat on and off he could control the amount of Hydrogen (&/or LiH) that is evolved, and hence available to the cat at any given time.
