As I pointed out in the book, more energy is lost in conversion than we derive from all the coal consumed in the U.S. The 27 quads of waste heat in the U.S. is equal to 7% of all energy consumed worldwide.

The low efficiency of nuclear power plants is deliberate. Because the fuel is cheap, efficiency is traded off for low temperature operation to extend the life of the equipment.
