Sure. For that matter you can use a reverse compiler and find out how Microsoft Windows works. However, when a person buys the software, or downloads a free copy from Google, that person will get the authorized, certified copy only.

Even if a hacker modifies the code to put a back door into it, he cannot persuade people to upload his version to their computers, and he cannot gain access to the master copy in the Google servers.

If someone tries to sell you a "discounted" version of Microsoft Windows on hand-made DVDs, they may also be handing you a Trojan horse. But if you purchase a copy from Best Buy or download it from the Microsoft site you can be sure it does not have any unauthorized patches.
