I mean the axis of rotation was horizontal. They were mounted on tall masts. Okay, these are called "vertical axis turbines."The only large-scale sails I know of in commercial ships today are the gigantic kites called "SkySails" that some ships use when the wind is in the right direction, to reduce the load on the engine and save fuel.
