It's the cilia attachment of the catalyst which acts as the whip to the Ni geometry to create the mirror enhancement. The Ni alone will provide some positrons; but, the whipping action of the catalyst in close proximity to the Ni which breaks the sound (light) barrier and enhances the pair separation.
